At last year’s SEMA show, Mopar unveiled an overclocked V8 straight from the 707hp Dodge Charger called the Hellcrate. This year, the manufacturer set the bar even higher and put on a unit inspired by the Hellcat engine, which is the first such a powerful unit from an OEM.
Today’s main character is the Hellephant engine from Mopar with 1,000 horsepower, which boasts a torque of almost 1,300 (exactly 1,288) Newton meters. The basis for this unit was the aforementioned Hellcat, which, however, was also modified. Mopar enlarged the cylinders and pistons, which in turn increased the displacement from 6.2 liters to a round 7 liters. He also changed the material, opting for aluminum cleats used, for example, in the Dodge Challenger Drag Pak racing model, which cut the weight by a few pounds. The Hellephant even got a new turbocharger and even a custom forged piston set and valves from the 880hp V8 from the Dodge Challenger Demon.
What can I say, this engine is a real tribute to the Dodge brand, so it had to be in one of these cars. A new home for him was the 1968 Dodge Charger, paired with a six-speed manual gearbox and a slightly refreshed exterior design. The Hellephant engine itself will go on sale next year, but its price has not yet been disclosed.
