Parallel Flight Technologies from California, currently looking for investors, showed its idea for a quadcopter. This is nothing more than a huge flying drone Firefly, designed to solve the two biggest problems of drones – short flight time and low payload, but at the moment it is not known when the Firefly can go into production.

Able to fly 100 minutes with a payload of up to 45 kilograms, the Firefly was developed in collaboration with NASA, the National Science Foundation, and the United States Department of Agriculture. It has a parallel hybrid propulsion system in which each of the four propellers is driven by a module connecting the electric motor with the gasoline engine. The former is used for maneuvers that require immediate torque, and the latter is used to continue calmer flight through the air. This also provides significant redundancy in the event of failure.

Current estimates say that the production version of the Firefly drone will be able to fly for 1 hour and 40 minutes or cover a distance of 201 km, dragging a load weighing up to 45 kg. With only a 23 kg payload, the Firefly’s flight time doubles, as does its range. So it can transport food products, medicines, fuel or tools, and it can even be used in the form of fighting forest fires in remote locations. The flight can be carried out on a pre-programmed path thanks to GPS, or remotely using a radio signal for a distance of up to 60 km.
