Intel presents the 28-core beast on the LGA 3647 server socket

Another presentation from the Computex fair does not reveal more and more advanced RGB lighting, but pure performance. Intel has revealed the as yet unnamed processor that holds the highest position in the HEDT segment, which indicates that we may be dealing with a representative of the Cascade Lake-X or Skylake-E HEDT families announced on numerous roadmaps.

But how did this processor make it the most efficient Intel chip on the consumer market? Well, 28 cores and 56 threads working with a base clock of 2.7 GHz. However, in the Cinebench R15 test, the clock of all cores (without overclocking) was at 5 GHz, which of course indicates a reliable Turbo mode, which in this case does a great job. This resulted in a score of 7,334, which compared to an overclocked 18-core Core i9-7980XE (about 5,000 points) is quite an achievement. As big as its price, because we can be sure (The predecessor Core i9-7980XE costs ~ $ 2,000) that it will be well over PLN 10,000. In turn, the date of his debut was set for an undefined date in the fourth quarter of 2018.

What about the motherboard? After all, the processor had to be tested for some, right? Intel may not have revealed anything special about it, but the people present at the conference managed to notice something interesting. This is also how we found out that the 28-core system worked on the AORUS design from Gigabyte with the LGA 3647 socket. The same one used mainly by the server Xeons from the blue ones. The captured photo shows as many as 12 slots for memory modules operating in hexa-channel configuration and a rectangular radiator indicating the new socket for HEDT solutions. Interesting facts include the fact (unconfirmed but probable) that Intel followed AMD’s Threadrippers and packed not one but two silicon cores connected together on one laminate. This explains not only the size, but also the number of pins needed to service them.
