Many manufacturers wonder how to prevent other road users from being afraid of autonomous vehicles. There are already ideas for intelligent lighting that make it clear to others that they have been noticed, and Jaguar Land Rover in turn has the idea of signaling the next movements of autonomous vehicles.
The technology was recently tested on a simulated city street in Coventry, UK, using PodZero autonomous electric vehicles developed by UK company Aurrigo. Each of them projected a series of horizontally arranged stripes on the road ahead of them through strong lighting that clearly indicated their intentions.
As the car accelerated, the spacing between these stripes widened, and when it slowed down, they braked, of course. They also behaved differently when turning, swinging left or right to indicate the direction being changed. The Jaguar Land Rover division responsible for this project worked with cognitive psychologists to positively assess the level of trust of pedestrians crossing the road. We will have to wait for the official results of the research of the company itself.
It is noteworthy that this technology is a corollary of the one that made the car “stare at pedestrians”, which they could even make eye contact with.
