Limited resources and no non-reference Radeon VII card models

AMD has managed to surprise us more than once or twice with the release of their graphics cards, and although these were not surprises from the group of positive ones, the premiere of Radeon VII may surpass all past mishaps. We have heard leaks, according to which this card would be sold only in the reference version, and its circulation would not exceed 5,000 copies.

Of course, this is not confirmed information, but likely, given that the Radeon VII is practically a slightly modernized MI50 card. As TweakTown informs, AMD was simply forced to release any powerful graphics card on the market in order not to give it up to the competition before the premiere of the Navi family. Therefore, the Radeon VII is nothing more than a converted MI50 (models intended for the professional market). Nay! The company is to be a loss on this model, because the Radeon VII (including drivers for video games was added to it) could be made much more expensive MI50. This explains the presence of the inexplicable and damn expensive VRAM – 16 GB HBM2.

Hence, information about the release to the market of only 5,000 pieces of this card. This, in turn, means that producers of non-reference variations will simply not pay off to create a special project for Radeon VII. This one will also have the double-precision calculation (FP64) function disabled, and not even 128 ROP (rendering) units, but only 64. Fortunately, AMD will present even more graphics cards this year, as confirmed by one of the directors.

I just heard back from AMD. It is officially 64 ROPs for the Radeon VII, not 128 as I was earlier led to believe. I’ve corrected our article accordingly.
