In June 2019, during the Army-2019 defense exhibition, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation signed a state contract for the construction of the third and fourth diesel-electric submarines with JSC Admiralty Shipyards. Today we learned that the new Project 677 submarines are already under construction, because the shipyard has started cutting steel for two ships at the same time.

We can read in the shipyard’s official announcement that the Project 677 submarines are classified as the fourth generation of non-nuclear submarines. In the eyes of the Russians, they are recognized as the most modern and promising non-nuclear submarines on the domestic market in terms of operational characteristics, with combat effectiveness at the forefront. As far as we know, the second ship of this type (Kronstadt – photo above) is currently being prepared for the second stage of factory sea trials.

In addition to it, the shipyard is currently working on the third and fourth submarines of this type. The first sheets of steel for these two ships have already been cut and finally each of them will be significantly different from the first ship of this type (St. Petersburg), because on this basis the engineers modernized the ship equipment control system, electric drive and navigation complex.
