Media: Nord Streams can be destroyed forever

BERLIN, Sep 28 – PRIME. The Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines could be destroyed forever if they are not promptly repaired, the German newspaper Tagesspiegel writes, citing sources in government circles.

“German security authorities assume that the three pipes of the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines will permanently become unusable after the alleged sabotage occurred. If they are not promptly repaired, a lot of salt water will enter the pipelines, which will corrode them,” – the newspaper notes, citing a source in government circles.

It is also indicated that the Federal Police will now increase control over German territorial waters, and its ships will closely monitor the relevant routes of critical infrastructure. In addition, the federal states must strengthen the protection of coastal areas in the North and Baltic Seas. There are also concerns about the protection of LPG terminals, submarine and telecommunications cables under construction, the publication added.

According to Tagesspiegel, citing experts and government circles, due to the complexity of the sabotage, it could only be carried out by a state entity. “Speculation points towards Russia, but the motive is unclear,” the newspaper writes. She clarifies that Russia has suffered billions in losses due to damage to pipelines.

The publication also notes that satellite images of possible movements of ships in anticipation of the explosions are currently being analyzed. According to one version, divers could have planted explosives on two pipes of Nord Stream and one of the two pipes of Nord Stream 2, a project that has not yet been put into operation.

On Monday, incidents occurred simultaneously on two Russian export gas pipelines to Europe. According to information from the authorities of Denmark and Sweden, two gas leaks were discovered at Nord Stream and one at Nord Stream 2 near the island of Bornholm. Germany, Denmark and Sweden do not rule out targeted sabotage. The Danish authorities have notified Russia that explosions have been recorded at the leak sites. The operator of Nord Stream, Nord Stream AG, reported that the incidents on gas pipelines are unprecedented, and it is impossible to estimate the timing of repairs.
