Micron is already sending DDR5 RAM to manufacturers

As usual in the industry, initially we will see this type of RAM first in business environments, for a little later, see it already in the consumer market. But don't worry, since as always, it means that development is going well and that sooner or later it will reach the market.

DDR5 RAM, an 85% increase in performance

According to the data provided by Micron during CES, the RDIMM (Registered DIMM, that's why they are for servers and not for consumers at the moment) that they are sending to their partners are based on the 1znm manufacturing process of the company. This DDR5 RAM memory doubles the density of the current DDR4, improving reliability and delivering more than one 85% additional yield.

DDR5 RAM also offers a lower consumption, or rather, a lower energy requirement, making it ultimately more efficient. It incorporates improvements like MIR ("mirror" pin) that improves the distribution of signals of the DIMM format, and have also mentioned that it will have more options for the PRECHARGE and REFRESH commands, although they have not specified what these will consist of.

That Micron has started sending samples of this type of memory represents a rather significant turning point, since it has just announced that it has taken the industry one step closer to the next generation of RAM.

When will the DDR5 RAM reach our PCs?

Again we must insist that for now this is only related to the business market (servers), but as always the consumer market will come just after, so in any case it is something that interests us. For now there is no road map that indicates approximate dates for the adoption of DDR5 memory on PC, because also keep in mind that this is something that it depends on both AMD and Intel more than the manufacturers of RAM, and so far none has announced official support for the new standard.

In any case, with Micron that already has very advanced production of this type of RAM, it is a matter of time that both AMD and Intel begin to perform their respective tests for the adoption of the new generation of memory, something that will happen sooner That is the same as it happened with DDR4 at the time.
