Most powerful desktop graphics card

Nvidia has unveiled the RTX Titan, its flagship graphics card, which the company claims is “the most powerful desktop graphics card in the world.”

After a series of teasers on social media that suggested an early launch of the graphics card, Nvidia announced that the Titan RTX will go on sale later in December at an incredible $ 2,499 (RR 160,000).

The asking price is monstrous, even by Nvidia standards when it comes to flagship Titan graphics cards, the best when it comes to desktop graphics cards.

The RTX 2080 Ti, which has remained the most powerful consumer graphics card from Nvidia so far, retailed for $ 1,199 – a lot of money, but the Titan RTX will have to deliver some serious performance to justify doubling the price.

According to Nvidia, the Titan RTX is going to offer:

  • 576 multithreaded Turing tensor cores providing up to 130 teraflops with deep learning;
  • 72 Turing RT cores that provide up to 11 GigaRays per second of real-time ray tracing;
  • 24GB of high-speed GDDR6 memory with 672GB / s bandwidth – memory from previous generations of Titan GPUs – for high-volume operations.
  • With 100Gb / s NVIDIA NVLink, two Titan RTX GPUs can be combined to double the performance.
  • Performance and memory bandwidth for real-time 8K video editing.
  • The VirtualLink port provides the performance and connectivity required for next-generation VR headsets.

On paper, it looks like the Titan RTX is going to be an extremely solid graphics card, but we’ll have to wait until we get a graphics card to test to see if it justifies such a high price tag.

Interestingly, too, Nvidia is referring to “next-gen VR headsets” – are we seeing a new HTC Vive or Oculus Rift soon?
