OneDrive, differential file download released: what it is and how it works

A big news has been introduced on the cloud storage service Microsoft's OneDrive, which will help reduce data usage and make saving files significantly more efficient. The company recently confirmed that it has enabled the differential synchronization for all types of files, on consumer and business clients. The biggest advantages will be visible with the large files, which will no longer have to be loaded from scratch when they change.

But what is differential synchronization? Through the new functionality it will be possible to synchronize for each file saved on OneDrive only the part that is actually modified, instead of loading the entire file every time a change is made. Previously, working on certain types of files of significant size could put a strain on local networks, restrictions on the data present in the packets in use, and in general make the entire work frustrating.

to say that the differential synchronization present on OneDrive for years, but only for the files of the proprietary Office suite. The big news now extended on all types of files: this is a function that is loudly requested by users, with references that can even be dated to 2014. Microsoft had reassured users in 2017, declaring that the feature would arrive, and then return to the topic two years later without news important.

Eventually arrived in 2020, starting from April 24, almost six years after the first request traceable online. The company confirmed that the feature now available for all file types and all clients and that, on Windows 10, it can be combined with on-demand synchronization. Both features can drastically ease the burden on OneDrive's (local and non-local) network, synchronizing only the files that are really needed, and only the parts that are modified.
