Pale Moon 31 is out now

Pale Moon 31 is the latest version of the desktop web browser. The new browser version comes after Pale Moon 29.4.6; this is done to avoid confusion regarding the release of Pale Moon 30.0 which was later pulled by the development team.

The new version is now available. Users can download it from the project’s official website or through automatic updates, which the browser supports. By selecting Pale Moon > Help > Check for Updates, run the search for the new version.

We reviewed Pale Moon 30.0 in March 2022. The development team pulled it days after the official release. In Post-mortem Interruption and Apology, Pale Moon’s lead developer, Moonchild, provides an explanation of the removal of the release version and general information on issues related to the decision.

According to the post, one of the developers, Tobin, left the project and wreaked havoc doing so. The exit resulted in various problems for the browser and its services, including the removal of the plugin server for the current version.

Moonchild summarizes what happened as follows in the release notes:

After our unacceptable and withdrawn release of v30.0.0 and 30.0.1 with the departure of one of our team’s core developers, forcing us to rewind and redo several months of work to exclude unwanted code changes and what it probably lay in the root. From the plethora of stability and runtime issues in the retired versions, we are back on track with a new milestone in UXP and Goanna (v5.1) with many improvements and additional features requested by users.

Version 30.0 of Pale Moon is omitted to avoid user confusion. The new version of the browser is Pale Moon 31.0.0, which users will need to install. It includes security updates and also functional updates. One of the improvements is the ability to install legacy Firefox extensions back into Pale Moon (alongside Pale Moon-exclusive addons).

Other enhancements include improved performance of parallel web workers in JavaScript, support for extended VPx codec strings, and various stability and crash fixes.

The full changelog is available here.
