Samsung begins mass production of second-generation HBM2 memory

Recent years have the type of memory High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) took tentative steps into the market, where AMD’s graphics processor Fiji was the first to use the technology. The updated variant HBM2 has since been used in graphics cards based on the Vega architecture and by Nvidia in Titan V, with 12 GB of graphics memory of the same type.

Now Samsung announces that they are starting mass production with the second generation of HBM2 memory, which has been named Aquabolt. Like the previous version of the memory type, these are 8 GB capsules consisting of eight circuits that are stacked and connected by technology. Through Silicon Via (TSV).

According to Samsung, the latest generation offers a bandwidth of 307 GB / s, which is an improvement of 20 percent compared to the 256 GB / s that is possible with the older variant. The new memory capsules have also been equipped with a protective cover and have been upgraded when it comes to the ability to adjust the temperature in the capsule.

Mass production has begun and the product will soon be rolled out to the company’s customers and in time take up space in supercomputers, artificial intelligence and graphics cards.
