Samsung replaced the 970 EVO Plus components. Now what about performance?

We have known about the secret replacement of chips (flash memory chips or DRAM) in SSD drives for a long time, and although many well-known companies have such mishaps so far, it has never been so gigantic. However, it turns out that even Samsung has something behind the skin, which is confirmed by the 970 EVO Plus drives, which in the new revisions are different from the previous ones.

Samsung has introduced new versions of the 970 EVO Plus drives to the market without officially announcing it

Samsung has not officially disclosed its actions because it was simply caught red-handed by the Computerbase YouTube channel. This one tested both the older Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1 TB drive (MZVLB1T0HBLR from April 2021) and the newer one (MZVL21T0HBLU currently in production).

Although apparently identical, their secret is hidden under the sticker, because they have different controllers (Phoenix vs Elpis) and mass memory, which are probably still 96-layer TLC, but within a different layout.

Testing showed the difference that the new version of the SSD is faster at manipulating files up to 115 GB, thanks to changes to the SLC buffer that now favors handling of smaller files. However, because of them, the new 970 Evo Plus 1 TB performs worse when it exhausts this cache, because instead of providing 1580 MB / s writing most of the time (after writing the first 40 GB), its performance drops to 830 MB / s after writing 115 GB.

On the one hand, the changes are favorable, on the other hand, on the contrary, the most important, or rather the worst, is that Samsung has not officially announced its actions. This is the biggest problem of this type of swap, although it should be emphasized here that in the past the company managed to play it perfectly with the premiere of 850 Evo V2.
