The European Union has introduced a new charging standard for mobile phones and tablets
BRUSSELS, 24 Oct – PRIME. The European Union has passed new legislation that will require all mobile phones and tablets to switch to a single charging type with a USB-C port from 2024, the EU Council said in a statement.
“Today, the Council finally approved the Single Charger Directive. This means that in 2024, USB-C will become mandatory for a range of electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets and headphones. No need to buy different chargers every time, when you buy a new mobile phone or similar device: they can all be charged using the same charger,” the release says.
In the EU, it was previously estimated that consumers annually spend around 250 million euros on the purchase of unnecessary chargers. Every year about 11,000 tons of unused or “extra” charges end up in the garbage.
The new rules will also apply to e-readers, digital cameras, game consoles, portable speakers and navigation systems, wireless mice and keyboards.
All laptops will also be subject to the new rules 40 months after they go into effect.
