The world’s first offshore charging station, StillStrom from Maersk, will soon be built

Container ships can consume three to five tonnes of fuel per day when idle. While this is impressive in itself, it is probably only the tip of the iceberg in terms of all the fuel absorbed (and pollutant emissions) from all the ships that dock onshore. Therefore, Maersk launched the Stillstrom venture, which created the world’s first offshore charging station.

To support the drive to decarbonise the maritime industry, Maersk came up with the idea of ​​the StillStrom system to eliminate exhaust emissions from idle ships. To this end, it will allow ships to obtain energy not from on-board combustion generators, but directly from the power grid.

Our vision at Stillstrom is to enable the decarbonisation of shipping by providing infrastructure that will allow ships to recharge with clean energy while idle at sea. Our mission is to remove 5.5 million tons of CO2 within five years of commercial launch, additionally eliminating particulate matter, NOx and SOx

As part of the StillStrom program, the first offshore charging station will be installed later this year on an offshore wind farm managed by Ørsted. Not without a reason, as it will supply energy to one of the company’s service vessels there.

This first offshore charging station is just the beginning, as with the support of government organizations, Maersk plans to cut emissions from the water industry by installing hundreds of full-size offshore charging stations outside of the ports. The group intends to install three to 10 buoys in a maximum of 100 ports by 2028.
