A team of researchers from the University of Central Florida has developed not so much a new type of battery, but an additive to the batteries that can either act as an integral part of the bodywork or be the body itself. In this application, it not only provides the appropriate level of durability, but also directly affects the battery’s capabilities, thanks to its combination with the capabilities of supercapacitors.
It all comes down to the “hybrid supercapacitor / battery device”. It consists of alternating positively and negatively charged layers of carbon fiber with sheets of graphene placed between them. The stacks thus formed were attached to electrodes coated with metal oxides, which ultimately increased the energy storage capacity, voltage, and energy density offered by the on-board battery system.

Scientists say that using their invention as an integral part of the car’s body to replenish the battery could increase the range by up to 25 percent, i.e. from 400 to 500 km. In addition, it would lower the weight of the vehicle while maintaining high strength and increase overall efficiency, thanks to capabilities similar to a supercapacitor. All this while maintaining non-toxic and non-flammable materials, and even ten times higher durability of the cells.
