Thunderbird 102: Support for multiple active spell check dictionaries
The open source email client Thunderbird will soon support several active spell check dictionaries. Planned for Thunderbird 102, the feature allows users to have Thunderbird check spelling errors using various dictionaries when composing messages.
Thunderbird users who speak multiple languages may have had difficulty checking spelling in the past. Current versions of the email client only support one active language at a time, and that meant users had to regularly switch languages or compose emails without checking spelling.
The change required selecting Options > Check Spelling, or using the shortcut Ctrl-Shift-P, to open the spell check window. The language menu listed all available spell check languages, and selecting a language changed the spell checker to that language.
Thunderbird includes only one language by default, but users can install new language dictionaries as extensions. The Dictionaries and Language Packs page on the official Thunderbird Add-ons website lists all of the available options. Once a dictionary is installed, it is available in language in the email client’s spell check window.
While checking for multiple languages is the primary goal of adding multi-asset dictionary support to Thunderbird, there are other use cases. Some users may want to add dialect dictionaries to Thunderbird, or dictionaries that use a different vocabulary not found in regular language dictionaries.
Whatever the reason, starting with Thunderbird 102, email client users will have the option to use them all at the same time when using the email client.
Thunderbird, which shares code with the Firefox web browser, follows the browser, which introduced support for several active spell check dictionaries in the Firefox 100 release.
Thunderbird users can refer to bug 1761221 for more information on the implementation.
Thunderbird 102 is a major new release that will include several new features and enhancements, including improved import of selected customer data.
The stable version of Thunderbird 102 is expected to be released in late June or early July 2022. Users interested in trying out the functionality can check out the daily builds of the email client, which already includes all the changes for the test.
