Two Atoun exoskeletons have arrived at CES

CES 2019 could not miss exoskeletons, which is one of the most interesting ways of developing consumer electronics. Although the Panasonic subsidiary Atoun is not the only one that decided to present them, their two models still deserve our attention.

They are not particularly revolutionary and rather follow the pattern we already know, but the fact that more and more producers deal with the subject of exoskeletons is simply refreshing … and not only for fans of science-fiction climates. Especially that there is always something at stake that is to support us in everyday work and mundane activities, such as walking or lifting weights.

The Model Y will deal with the relief in the latter case, which is said to have been available since July 2018, although I have not found any of its offers. The idea itself is simple – it boils down to something like a backpack attached to the chest and thighs and, thanks to two independent electric motors, provides a waist support of 22 pounds (~ 10 kg) when lifting or carrying heavy objects.

Hence, automatic switching between three modes – when lifting, when bending and just walking. Model Y is made of carbon fiber, therefore it weighs only 4.5 kilograms, including a battery capable of providing power for approximately four hours of use. It is even IP55 certified, and in action you can watch it below:

What about those people whose work is all about walking? Those might be interested in HIMICO, the lower body exoskeleton that is currently in the prototype stage, though Atoun says it already provides a maximum power gain of 19 percent when walking uphill, 17.8 percent when climbing stairs and 30.7 percent when climbing “Rough terrain”. It also uses a microprocessor to adjust performance to individual users, taking into account variables such as, for example, posture.
