a fast and secure portable SSD

a fast and secure portable SSD

Samsung has been one of the largest memory manufacturers in the world for several years now. Not only RAM however, also solid state memories are one of the businesses in which the Korean giant stands out. Thanks to the progressive lowering of prices, SSDs are no longer installed only inside PCs, but are increasingly used also for the creation of portable, fast and reliable memories.
There are many models on the market, but how many of these can be said to be actually safe? That's why Samsung created the T7 Touch, a portable SSD that has a peculiar feature: a fingerprint reader is installed on its body, capable of greatly increasing the security level of their data.

Designed for maximum speed and safety

Samsung T7 Touch is sold in a well-made packaging, testifying to the care taken in making the product. This is contained in a compartment separate from the rest of the bundle, which includes a USB Type C – USB Type C cable and a USB Type C – USB Type A cable, useful for connecting the memory even to devices with dated USB standards. Once the disk is connected to the PC, it is immediately recognized as an external drive, nothing different from a normal SSD. The difference is made by the configuration software, which allows you to store your fingerprint. The configuration is very simple, we did it directly from a smartphone, a Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, without going through the computer.

Once the disk is connected to the phone, it is recognized as an external drive, exactly like a PC. Just then install the dedicated application, available for both Android and iOS, to insert the fingerprint, pressing several times with your finger on the sensor on the SSD body.

Made this simple procedure, access to data is guaranteed only with fingerprint detection. If it is not inserted, the file names are not displayed once the disk is connected to a PC-smartphone. Fingerprint recognition is quick and accurate, after all Samsung's experience from the world of telephony is high.
There 256-bit AES data encryption and the possibility of entering an additional access password make the T7 Touch suitable for the transport of sensitive data.
Much attention is also paid to the physical protection of the memory unit. The body in which it is enclosed is in aluminum, for a total weight of 58 grams and dimensions of 8.5×5.7 cm, with a thickness of 6 mm. Carrying it is very simple, even in your pocket it does not create any nuisance. Particular the LED that surrounds the fingerprint reader, which lights up based on the actions performed by the memory, for example if it is being written.

On the technical front, the T7 Touch is equipped with a USB Type C 3.2 Gen2 interface, capable of transferring data at a maximum of 10 Gbps, and is available in 500 GB cuts (used during this test), 1 TB or 2 T , for a declared transfer rate of up to 1050 MB / s.
A data that is very close to what we got from our tests, carried out with a PC composed of Ryzen 3900X processor and MSI Meg X570 Godlike motherboard. In sequential reading and writing, the T7 reaches 1015 and 896 MB / s respectivelyvalues the line with the best products of this type on the market and with the second benchmark made with ATTO Disk Benchmark.

In a context of real use, which we simulated by copying a 46 GB folder with different types of files from the main disk of the test PC (with PCIex 4.0 interface) to the SSD, we detected an average speed of about 400 MB / s, with positive peaks that reached over 500 MB / s and negative around 300 MB / s. By copying a single 16 GB file, the transfer rate remained fixed between 519 and 522 MB / s, confirming the good performance of the T7.
