According to MSI, DDR5 memories would cost up to 60% more than DDR4

The arrival of DDR5 RAM is getting closer and closer, and according to the MSI blog, the price of new memory modules is likely to be even higher than anticipated. MSI explained that historically new types of RAM have had a price increase of between 30-40% over the price of the previous generation. However, the company predicts that in the case of DDR5 memories, the price difference would reach 50-60% on the price of DDR4 RAM.

This is mainly because new DDR5 memories include additional components that increase production costs, like its voltage conversion system, which was previously on the motherboard. In addition, the company does not know for how long these prices will be maintained until we notice a favorable change.

It generally takes around 2 years to reach price parity with previous generations, and we expect the trends to remain similar with DDR5 modules.

At the moment, no manufacturer has detailed the prices of its DDR5 RAM memory modules. We may have to wait for Intel’s release of Alder Lake to get that information, which will take place next week.

In terms of performance, the DDR5 memory modules announced so far offer impressive operating frequencies, although it should also be noted that many of them also have slightly high latencies. In addition, there is an important factor to consider and that is that, despite the global shortage of silicon, DDR4 modules are more affordable than ever and kits with high speeds and low latency are available, making them a tempting offer if we have Note that Alder Lake will also support DDR4. It will be necessary to offer a great improvement over its predecessor for DDR5 to become the new standard from now on, especially if it is accompanied by a considerable increase in price, and for this you may have to wait a few more months.

Did you expect such a price increase on DDR5 RAM versus DDR4?
