7-nanometer Nvidia GPU, TSMC will handle most of the production

During GTC 2019 in China, the CEO of Nvidia Jen-Hsun Huang announced that TSMC will manufacture most of the future 7-nanometer GPUs. Samsung will instead handle fewer orders, contrary to what was previously rumored.

Jen-Hsun Huang reiterated that Nvidia has had very close relationships with TSMC for some time, with Pascal GPUs produced at 16 nanometers and Volta and Turing solutions at 12 nanometers. The company believes that the synergy with TSMC, in particular on 12 nanometers, has allowed it to offer better efficiency and performance than competing AMD 7-nanometer solutions. A concept already underlined in the past.

Regarding SamsungIn the past, Nvidia has relied on the South Korean company to produce mobile GPUs or low-end desktop solutions. We remember the GP107 GPU (Pascal), while on the Turing front there seems to have been no agreement. It is not clear what Samsung will specifically deal with this time: it may not even be GPUs, but of the Orin SoC for the autonomous cars of 2022.

Nvidia’s 7-nanometer graphic architecture should be called Ampere and according to rumors – not confirmed of course – it should guarantee an important leap forward both in terms of performance (in particular in ray traicng) and efficiency.

As for the debut of new video cards, Nvidia’s chief financial officer Colette Kress said the company wants to surprise the public. According to rumors, Nvidia will unveil the first 7-nanometer Ampere GPUs in March 2020 during the GPU Technology Conference (GTC), while the gaming offer will be presented at Computex 2020 in June. Obviously take these dates with caution, at least until there is some concrete evidence.
