AMD achieves highest ever x86 CPU market share

AMD’s efforts with x86 CPUs continue to pay off, narrowly edging out Intel’s dominance in every category of the market. Intel should be particularly concerned about AMD’s continued gains in the server space, where companies are slowly getting used to the idea of using Epyc processors. Meanwhile, the desktop CPU market is going through a rough patch, with Arm chips growing in importance in both the desktop and laptop markets.

But with the release of the first generation of Zen CPUs and continued investment, they have brought very positive results for AMD. According to analysts at Mercury Research, the company achieved its largest share of the x86 CPU market in its entire history in the first fiscal quarter of 2022.

AMD achieved its largest share of the x86 CPU market in its entire history.

This comes even at a time when rival Intel, after a few disappointing CPU generations, has made huge strides in power and efficiency with the 12th-gen Alder Lake lineup. Mercury says that AMD commanded 27.7% of the market in the first quarter of this year, up 2.1% from the previous quarter and 7% from the year before the analysis.

AMD also increased its participation in the server sector, although the numbers obtained by it were more discreet. According to the research firm, the manufacturer has an 11.6% share in the segment, a quarterly increase of 0.9% and an annual increase of 2.7% compared to previous analysis.

With all this AMD still has a drop in market share with desktop CPUs compared to last year

Mercury Research analysis shows that while overall results have been positive for the company, it has not achieved growth in all segments. In the area of desktop CPUs, for example, it had a 1% drop in its market share from the previous year, dominating 19.3% of the segment.

While not exactly positive for the company, the figure represents a 2.1% increase in the company’s share from the previous quarter. According to Mercury analysts, this represents a recovery in the company’s business after it lost some ground thanks to the good performance of the Alder Lake line.

The entire desktop CPU segment saw a 30% decline in the last fiscal quarter.

According to analytics firm president Dean McCarron, the entire desktop CPU segment saw a 30% decline in sales in the last fiscal quarter. According to him, this is the result of a drop in PC demand, the global crisis in semiconductors and the blockades that caused the closure of factories in strategic places such as China.

AMD also increased its participation in the mobile market, where it reached 18% of the analyzed devices. With quarterly increases of 0.9% and annual increases of 4.4%, the manufacturer registered the highest increases in its entire history in this market, although it will still have to fight hard to overcome competitors such as ARM and Apple.

According to Mercury, the success of Chromebooks and Macs based on the M1 chip has caused both companies to see a big increase in sales. The analyst firm also states that the mobile market seems to have reached a point of maturity, with the average price of CPUs reaching $138, proof that consumers are increasingly focusing on high-performance products.
