AMD and Intel desktop CPU sales, what's going on pending Comet Lake

Mindfactory, a leading German hardware retailer, released i Intel and AMD CPU sales data for the month of March. It is a single retailer and for this reason it only photographs the specific situation, but it is still interesting to get an idea of how things are going in the sector. During the news we will also look at i Amazon bestsellers in some countries, Italy included.

Going back to Mindfactory, you can see the situation is almost stable in terms of sales quotas, with AMD which for four months has catalyzed between 85% and 88% of purchases, leaving Intel 12-15%. In March, sales grew, with AMD reaching around 21/22 thousand units, with Intel stopping at around 3 thousand CPUs.

To be popular in home AMD we have the usual Ryzen 5 3600 (Amazon) e Ryzen 7 3700X (Amazon), followed by the Ryzen 9 3900X (Amazon). On the Intel front, the most requested continue to be i K processors, with the Core i7-9700K (Amazon), the Core i5-9600K (Amazon) and the Core i9-9900K (Amazon). By virtue of these consumer purchasing choices, the second turnover chart shows a 16% share for Intel.

We reiterate, it is a single retailer, and to expand the discussion a little we look at the bestsellers on Amazon Italy, Germany and the United States. Again, know that the rankings may change slightly from one hour to the next, so what you see is the photograph of the moment we write the news. Overall, however, the data allow us to outline the situation broadly.

In the Italian bestsellers we see in the top five positions of Ryzen processors, with the 3600X (Amazon) and the 2600X (Amazon) at the top. The top 10 sees the presence of four Intel CPUs, among which we note the Core i3-9100F (Amazon) and the Core i5-9600KF (Amazon). By slightly expanding the sample, the top 12 sees a numerical draw between the parts.

Turning to United States, the moment we checked, nine out of ten processors among the best sellers are AMD, with the Core i7-9700K as Intel bulwark. Interesting as among the best sellers there is also the old Ryzen 5 1600. It is an AF model (Amazon), ie an atypical processor, based on Zen + architecture at 12 nanometers (like the 2000 series) and not on Zen architecture at 14 nanometers, like the original 1600. In practice it behaves very similarly to the 2600.

The same US picture in terms of top 10 we also see it in Germany, mirroring Mindfactory data. Recall that Intel, according to rumors, is awaiting the announcement (actual availability should come later) of the new range of 10th generation Core CPUs at the end of the month, codenamed Comet Lake.

As we have already explained, we will see Core i9 CPUs up to 10 cores and 20 threads and all other series will gain Hyper-Threading. Will the new Comet Lake CPUs change the situation? It would not be correct for us to express ourselves in the absence of a complete picture – direct evidence, prices – but it is certainly what Intel is aiming for. We’ll see.
