AMD confirms that Windows 11 decreases the performance of its CPUs by 15%, prepares a patch

Windows 11 has already been officially released, and as usual, it came with various problems. One of them is that AMD processors compatible with the new version of the OS can suffer significant performance losses in some games and applications.

As revealed by the company itself in a statement in which it claims to be aware of the problem, some game titles classified as eSports show performance losses of up to 10-15%. For other applications, AMD says the performance hit is between 3% and 5%. Both AMD and Microsoft are working on updates to fix these problems. They are expected to be available later in October.

All Ryzen processors that support Windows 11 were affected. This includes the Zen +, Zen 2, and Zen 3 CPUs from the Ryzen 2000, Ryzen 3000, Ryzen 4000, and Ryzen 5000 series. Additionally, some AMD EPYC data center processors and some newer Athlon chips also suffered.

AMD’s advisory says that the problems fall into two categories. First, L3 cache latency can increase up to 3 times. The bug affects applications that are sensitive to memory latency, causing a performance reduction of 3-5%. Games “commonly used for eSports” saw an atypical performance reduction with values ​​between 10-15%. This is not surprising given that these games are extremely sensitive to memory and cache latency.

Secondly, AMD’s preferred kernel feature wouldn’t be working as expected either. This feature directs single-threaded applications to the fastest core on the chip. AMD says that this performance reduction may be more noticeable on chips with 8 or more cores and a TDP rating of 65W or more.

Both AMD and Microsoft are actively working to fix these issues. They will release updates as soon as possible. AMD suggests its customers to use Windows 10 until the problems are fixed.
