AMD partners with Google to use Google Cloud infrastructure for chip manufacturing

AMD announced that it has partnered with Google to leverage the company’s cloud infrastructure to reduce electronic design automation (EDA) workloads.

AMD’s strategy is to use the processing power of Google Cloud, expanding the reach of its data centers, without necessarily having to physically expand its data centers. As such, AMD intends to work on projects in parallel, giving engineers greater flexibility to manage their near-term computing demands, using Google Cloud’s C2D virtual machine powered by 3rd Generation AMD EPYC processors.

AMD’s idea is to save time in the development of new architectures

The manager and vice president of Google Cloud Infrastructure, Sachin Gupta, says that Google is happy to collaborate with AMD. ” In today’s semiconductor environment, the speed, scalability, and security of the cloud unlock the flexibility you need. We are pleased to provide the necessary infrastructure to meet AMD’s computing performance needs and equip the company with our AI solutions to continue designing innovative chips.”

AI and Machine Learning, the future

Developing a new chipset architecture design can take years, considering all the pre-production, production, and testing steps that need to be taken into account. By using Google’s artificial intelligence and machine learning solutions, AMD can make its development and design processes for new architectures more flexible.

Analyzing all the possibilities and designs of a new architecture can be very hard work for engineers. Now, with Google’s computing power, AMD should be able to speed up various steps in the process of designing and creating different chips and architectures for new chips.
