AMD-powered Frontier supercomputer is now the world’s fastest

The Frontier supercomputer, powered by AMD EPYC CPUs, It has achieved the title of being the most powerful supercomputer in the world. The supercomputer is based at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the US state of Tennessee. Rated at 1,102 exaflops, Frontier’s performance is more than double that of the previous record holder, Fugaku. With such performance, it becomes the first machine to officially break the exascale barrier.

Forrest Norrod, senior vice president and general manager of AMD’s Data Center Solutions Group, said in a press release:

“We are excited that AMD EPYC processors and AMD Instinct accelerators will power the fastest, most energy-efficient supercomputer and the world’s first supercomputer to break the exascale barrier.

Innovating and bringing more performance and efficiency to supercomputers is essential to tackle the world’s most complex challenges. AMD EPYC processors and AMD Instinct accelerators continue to advance high-performance computing, delivering the performance needed to advance scientific discovery.”

The supercomputer not only has exceptional performance, but is also the most energy efficient, delivering 62.68 gigaflops/watt of power efficiency in a single chassis of 3rd Gen AMD EPYC processors and AMD Instinct MI250x accelerators.

The network is powered by HPE Slingshot-11 interconnect technology, designed explicitly to accelerate high-performance computing (HPC) workloads.

AMD has been growing in the area of ​​servers and supercomputers

AMD says it is leading the way in HPC, enabling partners and customers to deploy clusters of all sizes. They cover key research areas that include things like manufacturing, medicine, financial services, climate research, and more.

One example is how Thailand’s National Science and Technology Development Agency is using its supercomputer to advance research in medicine, weather forecasting and more.

The next step for Frontier is to continue testing the system through the end of 2022. The supercomputer will be open to a limited number of researchers until the end of the year and will launch publicly in 2023.
