AMD says the AM4 platform is far from dead

Today AMD made its presentation at Computex 2022 and it launched several announcements, new CPU, new Socket, new motherboards and more. But all that doesn’t mean that socket AM4’s days are numbered. Dr. Lisa Su, President and CEO of AMD, confirmed that the platform will continue to be supported by the company and its partners for years to come.

Socket AM4 was released alongside AMD’s first Ryzen processors in 2017. Since then, they continue to receive brand support and are classified as a successful platform. Earlier this year, during CES 2022, the company’s CEO had already mentioned that the AM4 socket would follow for a few more years. And now, the executive’s new statement reinforces AMD’s intent.

Keeping the platform alive should indicate that the sockets will continue to be supported by software and perhaps newer CPUs. However, none of this was explicitly said by AMD.

AMD has set the launch date for the new socket AM5 between the months of September and November of this year. As with the previous standard, AM5 should have a long shelf life, and according to AM4, this should indicate a shelf life greater than five years.

“I don’t have an exact number of years, but I would say that AM5 will be a long-lasting platform like AM4 has been.”said Dr. Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, at CES 2022, when AMD introduced its new socket AM5.

The new standard brings important news regarding AM4, such as the change of structure from PGA to LGA, support for PCI 5.0 in various motherboard connections and DDR5. AMD has also confirmed that the current AM4 line coolers will not lose compatibility in this new AM5 generation.
