AMD wants to speed up the loading of games with Smart Access Storage

AMD presented its new processors today at Computex 2022, in addition to saying that we will play with 5.5 GHz processors, they also talked about Smart Access Storage technology, which promises to significantly speed up game load times. According to the company, it is an implementation of Microsoft’s DirectStorage API that uses the power of the latest hardware to help with file decompression.

According to the manufacturer, the novelty uses Proprietary technology and GPU decompressionwhich enables better collaboration between a CPU and graphics processor, to improve PC performance. When gaming, the technology allows texture data to be stored in VRAM, freeing up CPU memory for other tasks.

So far, AMD hasn’t released many details about how Smart Access Storage differs from the features offered by Microsoft’s DirectStorage. Technology Introduced in Xbox Series X and S since launch, the feature sends game data directly from storage to the GPU, drastically reducing game load times.

AMD promises more news in the coming months

During its announcement, the manufacturer promised that it will release more details about the technology in the coming months. From the images released so far, there are strong indications that in order to take advantage of the faster loading times it offers, developers will need to implement the new feature during the creation of their games.

AMD teased Smart Access Storage in late 2020, presenting it as a solution that improved gaming performance when Ryzen 5000-series CPUs were paired with Radeon RX 6000-series GPUs. Apparently, the new announcement is an expansion , which has been adapted to support a larger amount of hardware.

The new feature could make its debut on the Corsair Voyager “AMD Advantage” line of gaming laptops. It remains to wait and see if we soon have new information to know what advantages the technology can bring and what the necessary requirements will be for consumers to take advantage of it.
