ASRock uses PlayStation 5 ‘discarded’ chips in a RIG for cryptocurrency mining

The well-known leaker Komachi, who had already revealed some information about the products in the past AMDhe unearthed in a Slovenian online shopa curious mining RIG calledASRock Minig RIG 610. The peculiarity of the solution lies in the chips used: 12 APU AMD BC-250 which appear to be the same ones integrated into PlayStation 5.

According to Komachi, these are defective chips of the well-known APU that powers PS5, which AMD had already found reuse with desktop kits. 4700S e 4800S. The two kits take advantage of the8 coreZen 2 e 16 threadof the CPU component, capable of offering performance similar to mid-high-end gaming processors, but see the integrated GPU disabled.

In this case, however, the RIG dedicated to cryptocurrency mining, a task in which it reaches a hash rate of 610 MH / s (About 50 MH / s per APU), achieved by five NVIDIA RTX 3090s. This makes us assume that, in this specific case, the GPU cores are perfectly functional, as opposed to what happens with the desktop kits. Since there is no dedicated CPU, probably one of the APUs performs this task, also taking care of managing the other units present.

The price of ASRock’s solution amounts to 13499 eurofor a system that apparently appears to offer a complete configuration with16 GB of memory GDDR6five fans for cooling etwo 1200W power supplies.

It is basically an alternative to do-it-yourself RIGs, which can allow easy access to the world of mining, even if with the passage of Ethereum to the Proof of Stake the operation may not give the expected returns.
