Asus shows an adapter that allows using DDR4 memory on DDR5 motherboards

Although in most cases there is no difference in performance between using DDR4 and DDR5 memory in Alder Lake processors, those who want to use high-end motherboards, either by necessity or by simple pleasure, are forced to acquire this new type of memories that on average cost three times that of DDR4 memories, implying a large additional cost that is generally not necessary. To solve this, Asus ROG is working on an adapter that allows the use of DDR4 memories on DDR5 motherboards, avoiding the expensive purchase of next-generation memories.

This adapter is responsible for adapting all the necessary connections, and also has a voltage regulation system since DDR5 motherboards do not have voltage regulation for RAMs because this circuit is now in the memory module. Since DDR4 memory needs external voltage regulation, this must be provided by this adapter, which causes it to be large.

[Bing餅哥#2132](Subtitle) ROG Soul’s DDR5 to DDR4 special study, how to implement DDR5 or DDR4 on the same motherboard?

Apparently in a video of the Chinese youtuber Lin Dabing Bing, this prototype is fully functional and the DDR4 memories are perfectly detected by the motherboard. However, Asus does not plan to launch it yet as they are looking to optimize its design to reduce the height of the PCB to avoid interference with air sinks and also improve its aesthetics, so we will have to wait a little longer to see this adapter on the market. .

It will be interesting to see how much these adapters cost, as they won’t make much sense if the cost of the adapter plus the cost of DDR4 memory ends up equal to the cost of DDR5 memory. However, if it allows to reduce costs and use DDR4 memory on a high-end motherboard, it could be an attractive option to improve the price-performance of the platform.

There are no estimates yet on when we will be able to see the final version of this adapter, although we will be keeping you up to date with the news, so stay tuned to HD Tecnología to see how its development continues.

What do you think about this Asus adapter that allows you to put DDR4 ram memory on motherboards for DDR5? Would they buy it if it was affordable?
