Beyond Skyrim Morrowind authors appreciated by Bethesda

Bethesda decided to draw players’ attention to an unusual modification to their iconic game. Beyond Skyrim Morrowind will allow players of The Elder Scrolls V to return to the land of the third installment of the series.

What is Beyond Skyrim Morrowind and other projects?

The Beyond Skyrim project itself is a collection of several large mods that are designed to recreate in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim the land from previous games and the Elder Scrolls DLC, as well as a few places that were barely mentioned in Bethesda’s productions. Locations visited in previous games are updated to the “present day” in TES V, so sometimes they are ahead of the prototypes by several hundred years.

Why Morrowind? The authors of this branch of Beyond Skyrim admit that what stood out for them in the game was the aesthetics, weirdness and extraordinary consistency of this weirdness. It was one of the first fantasy worlds to not draw on the ripped themes of medieval England. Moreover, everything had its own logic. There were no NPC characters to hold our hand and explain everything. You had to understand this environment and your place in it.

Getting to grips with the challenge of moving a 1: 1 game is one thing. The second, however, is to update the world by two hundred years. The state of Morrowind’s world is to match the times when Skyrim takes place. How did the authors approach the challenge of reviving the lands of Morrowind in an era where the events of TES V: Skyrim take place?

Meglos: Of course, it is impossible not to mention the Red Mountain, which erupted between the Morrowind era and the present Skyrim era. At the beginning, we talked a lot about how to include this event in the game, and if it’s even possible. The most interesting task was to develop the entire policy of the continent and what important factions survived – will they return from previous titles, whether they will be groups only mentioned in the games, or we will come up with something ourselves.

Seriously: I think the hardest part of bringing Morrowind to the Skyrim era was to convey that 200 years is a very long time! It may seem that the Red Year and the Black Marsh raids happened a decade or two ago, and meanwhile most of the people who remembered those events are now dead, and while the consequences were colossal, Morrowind quickly recovered. It seems to me that an important element of the philosophy of BS: Morrowind is the fact that we are dealing with a new nation, free from the shackles of the past, which has suffered two major disasters in the last two centuries but has not been destroyed anyway.
