In NVIDIA’s face, some Chinese OEM partners are making laptop GPU-equipped desktop cards, the RTX 3060, which are also sold to miners. This is happening without NVIDIA’s knowledge, and has been going on for a while.
RTX 3060 GPUs for laptops are being manufactured as RTX 3060 cards for desktop PCs, these perform less well in games than the desktop RTX 3060 with LHR, but basically provide a much higher hash rate for mining since laptops were never subject to NVIDIA’s limitation with Lite Hash Rate, LHR.
The cards are generic and come with a fake NVIDIA logo, a dual-fan cooling solution, a backplate, and a single HDMI output.
The cards are sold on Chinese websites for around $540 to $570 wholesale. That they sell them in bulk indicates that it is a large and very prosperous business.
The mining software detects GPUs as a laptop variant, and comes with 3840 CUDA cores (7% more than the desktop variant) and 6GB of memory. These cards offer around 50 MH/s in ETH mining, which is around 38% higher than the desktop RTX 3060 with LHR.
One must wonder how an unknown Chinese brand is actively selling these laptop GPUs as desktop models, and that they are clearly targeting miners. NVIDIA will sanction this company?
