Draw This – a camera that will make you a unique photographer

You can’t take pictures at all, but you want to capture the best moments of your vacation in an unusual way? If so, take a look at Draw This, a camera from an amateur artist who focuses on something other than an accurate representation of reality.

Dan Macnish, creator of Draw This, talks about the project on his blog. Interestingly, this “camera” uses a database that Google managed to compile with the 2016 actions, Quick, Draw! It was aimed at checking Google’s artificial intelligence, but after two years, fortunately, it will not rest in the digital depths of inactivity. It is on the basis of this database that the Draw This engine works. This one uses three main components: a digital camera module, a handful of electronics, and a simple thermal printer. Everything is closed in a cardboard box.

The camera “guesses what the author meant”, then compares it with items in the database and prints simple patterns on said paper. However, this has some drawbacks, because this paper works like heat – the right amount of it causes the paper to color black. This is, of course, perishable – remember the traditional receipts in stores. So in the end everything works (approximately) like this:

  • You take a picture (e.g.) of a tree next to which a man with a dog is standing
  • The camera recognizes three objects and searches for the most appropriate drawings in the database
  • It then sends the information to the printer, which prints monochrome photos

Easy? Easy. Unfortunately, to such an extent that repeatability will occur sooner or later. However, if you are interested, you can do it at home. You can find the instructions on the mentioned blog. Nothing is known about the mass production of Draw This or even the Kickstarter campaign. However, if you like the idea, it should happen sooner or later.
