End of production of the affordable Smart EQ ForFour electric car

Automotive is changing, Smart is changing, but … how to explain in all of this the reason for the withdrawal from production of the Smart EQ ForFour electric car, which was one of the more affordable BEVs on the market?

Smart finishes the production of its BEV. Where did this decision about Smart EQ ForFour come from?

As you probably know, Smart began fraternizing with the Chinese automotive company Geely through a joint venture. The one called Smart Automobile was created under an agreement between the current owner of the Smart brand, Daimler AG, and Geely. In a way, the latest cuts in the range are due to this – they are designed to slim down the already small Smart range to make room for other models to be produced in China, but with the global market in mind.

Removing the Smart EQ ForFour from the offer and production will not affect the Smart EQ ForTwo, which will remain in production. However, the same movement nowadays, in which combustion models are being removed from the market in favor of electric ones, is strange … but only on the surface. The Smart EQ ForFour still offers a lot if you are looking for a city model, but with over four years on the back of its neck it is no longer particularly new to the BEV market. It would definitely require refreshing for the coming years, which may not be enough for the company to move into the “new” era for Smart.

As a more practical version of the EQ ForTwo, the Smart EQ ForFour provides a driveline with 80 horsepower and a range of approximately 125 kilometers, which was refurbished with the appropriate charger in 40 minutes. This is all thanks to the relatively small lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 17.6 kWh, while currently, packages with a capacity of 60-100 kWh are used.
