For the first time in history, a drone saved a patient from a heart attack

The Swedish company Everdrone has developed the Emergency Aerial Delivery (EMADE) service with a drone in the lead role in cooperation with the Center for Resuscitation Science at Karolinska Institutet, SOS Alarm and Region Västra Götaland. All this to enable even faster response to crisis situations in the healthcare system, and so recently it paid off for the first time, because the drone saved a patient from a heart attack.

How did the drone save a patient from a heart attack?

The EMADE service allows emergency dispatchers to send both an ambulance and a drone to the caller, potentially starting the medical response process earlier. The drone is much faster than an ambulance and this turned out to be crucial on December 9 last year for a 71-year-old man in Trollhättan, Sweden, who suffered a heart attack. This requires a response within 10 minutes, and after reporting, the drone arrived with an automated external defibrillator in just 3 minutes.

An outsider, who was also a doctor, used a defibrillator on the patient after CPR, and after initial treatment at the scene, the patient was taken to hospital, where he regained full fitness.

I was on my way to work at the local hospital when I looked out the car window and saw a man collapsing in his driveway. I understood immediately that something was wrong and hurried to help. The man did not have a pulse so I started CPR while asking another passerby to call 112 (the Swedish emergency number). A few minutes later I saw something flying overhead. It was a defibrillator drone !.
