Google plans to replace Chrome cookies and site data controls with a lower option
Comments on Chromium’s official issue tracker confirm that Google plans to deprecate browser cookies and site data controls in favor of a page that has inferior functionality at the time of writing.
Many Chrome users know that they can use controls to clear cookies and site data in Chrome. All that is needed is to load the internal URL chrome: // settings / siteData to get started.
Chrome lists all the sites that have stored cookies and other site data on the local system.
You can search the selection, explore it, delete individual cookies, and check what a particular site has stored on the local system.
The option gives users control over the data, as they can analyze the stored data from that same page.
A recent comment by a Google employee on Chromium’s official bug tracking site confirms that Google plans to deprecate the entire cookie and data page of the site. Chromium is the foundation for many web browsers, including Google’s Chrome web browser, but also Microsoft Edge, Vivaldi, Opera, or Brave.
The page is removed and Google plans to direct the user’s attention to another internal page, chrome: // settings / content / all.
The page looks like the original at first glance; lists the name of the site, presents a search, the total storage space used by the site, and also options to expand the selection.
When you do that, you will notice that the stored site content is no longer displayed on the page. The link points to the Chrome site permissions page for the site, but there is no longer an option on the page to view the site data itself. Also, there is no longer the option to delete individual cookies that a site has set using the page.
Note: you can still delete individual cookies by clicking the icon in front of the address in the Chrome address bar. Select a line, for example, about cookies, to show details about all configured cookies and an option to delete cookies individually.
Jeff Johnson discovered Google’s intent by accident when he filed a bug in the Chromium crawler. Johnson is critical of change, taking information and control away from users. It didn’t find out why Google plans to make the change, just that it will.
There is a possibility that the new page will receive the functionality of the old one, but Google has not made any comment on that and if the past changes are something to go through, it seems unlikely.
Other Chromium-based browsers will also receive the change. While some browsers may retain the old page by adding your code back to Chrome, most Chromium-based browsers will likely end up with the lower option if the Chromium engineers don’t improve it.
