Huawei working on its own GPUs for datacenters: cloud and AI at the center

The South Korean magazine The Elec signals Huawei's intention to open a division specialized in solutions for cloud and artificial intelligence applications during the year, so as to offer its own solutions on the market.

Huawei would be currently proceeding with the key figures collection phase to give life to this new organization, where possible going to gather experience in the sector from people who have worked in committed companies: it is obvious in this sense to make the name of NVIDIA.

Huawei, through its subsidiary HISILICON, is engaged in the development of its SoC solutions that have been made very popular in recent years as they are adopted within their smartphones. The internal research of HiSilicon has also led to the development of dedicated chips, such as that Ascend 910 dedicated precisely to the elaborations of artificial intelligence.

For this solution, Huawei has indicated a power that reaches 256 TeraFLOPS, a value approximately double compared to what declared by NVIDIA for its Resla V100 GPU destined for datacenters. These are obviously theoretical maximum peak values which however help to understand what Huawei's commitment and investment is in this specific area.

Huawei could therefore go further and further into the solutions dedicated to parallel computing in the datacenter, also developing specific GPUs for these areas and entering direct competition with NVIDIA, AMD and Intel In this compound. The Asian company has also introduced the chip Kunpeng 920, a CPU based on ARMv8 architecture with 64 cores internally which is designed for big data processing.

Huawei's interest in the world of data centers should not in any case surprise: the Chinese company boasts research and development in various ICT sectors that it has been carrying out for years and which is the basis of the success of its solutions, as well as the considerable variety of areas in which Huawei is engaged.

In recent days, with this news, we have reported the most recent analysis on the GPU market developed by Jon Peddie in which we report Intel's next entry into this sector with its new GPUs, in addition to the possible debut of solutions by another company. It could therefore be precisely Huawei, oriented not to the consumer sector but to that of the datacenter.
