i5-10600K vs Ryzen 5 3600: Which is Best?  –AMD’s Zen 2 series has been savagely assaulting all price ranges, offering products that are much cheaper and more performing than Intel ones. With the new Comet Lake processors, Intel wants to get back competitive, regaining control of a market that for many years had seen it clearly superior to AMD.

Today’s comparison will see therefore challenge each other on the one hand a processor belonging to the new Comet Lake series, l’i5 10600K, and on the other the Ryzen 5 3600, one of those processors that allowed AMD to steal the scepter from Intel. The first difference that you notice looking at the technical data sheets are the different architectures: the i5 is based on the new Comet Lake while il Ryzen su Zen 2. Of course, the supported sockets are also different, with the Ryzen that supports AM4 e the i5 the new LGA 1200: this new socket forces us, in case we want to buy the Intel-branded processor, to also buy a new motherboard, the Z490 or B460. Both processors feature 6 cores and 12 threads, the i5 has a higher base and maximum frequency than Ryzen though. As part of the K series, the i5 10600K, as clearly as the Ryzen 5 3600, is also overclockable. Currently, the price difference between the Intel and AMD solution it is quite marked, but it should diminish over time.

Cinebench R20

Let’s start testing with Cinebench, a widely used software that allows us to compare the performance of the two CPUs both in single-thread and in multi-thread. In the graphs below we can see how the performance difference is minimal: in the test in single-thread l’i5 10600K ha slightly the best, in multi-thread and instead the Ryzen 5 3600 to be the best, albeit always a little.

7-Zip

In the second test we are going to observe the performance in compression and decompression on 7-Zip, one of the most used programs for managing compressed files. In compression, the i5 gets the better of it, with a not particularly marked advantage, in decompression instead the Ryzen 5 manages to clearly detach the Intel solution.

Corona Benchmark

We close the production tests with Corona, also in this test we can see how the difference between the two processors is not that great: the i5 manages to detach the Ryzen but not by much.

Consumption

The consumption graph tells us that the i5 consumes 5-10% more than the Ryzen, a difference that becomes bigger if we look exclusively at the consumption in multi-thread.

Video games

If in the production tests the difference in performance is not marked, nel gaming the situation changes, with the i5 which has an advantage not gigantic but surely noteworthy. For the Ryzen 5 the challenge was tough: the i5 10600K is a processor with an excellent gaming performance / price ratio, as it manages to offer similar performance to much higher cost processors like the i7 10700K.

The tests and the comparison of the data sheets give us an overview of the two CPUs: the i5 10600K was the most performing in both production tests, even if only slightly, che nel gaming, in this case with a more important advantage; the Ryzen 5 3600 succeeds then to hold its own in general use, but it is beaten in gaming from the excellent performance of the i5, which manages to offer performance very similar to that of processors that cost much more.

Said this, which of the two do we recommend? Both processors are in our opinion very good choices, especially considering the performance / price ratio, and it is therefore difficult to choose just one of the two. If we had to choose, our choice would fall on the Ryzen 5 3600: currently it costs significantly less than the i5 and is still excellent both in general use and in gaming. The cost of the motherboards must also be considered: the Z490s that support the new Intel processors cost more than those that support the Zen 2 series processors, and this is another cost to consider when buying a new processor. As we often tell you, if you are interested in gaming we always recommend avoiding, except in special cases, to spend insane amounts on CPUs, it is always better to take a good processor and combine it with an excellent GPU than the other way around. If you want to try the new Intel series, the i5 is still a very good performance processor both in general use and, above all, in gaming.
