Intel XeSS debuts in the real world with a Shadow of the Tomb Raider patch

The first game available on the market to support upscaling technology XeSS (Xe Super Sampling), recently investigated by Intel and analyzed by Digital Foundry, is Shadow of the Tomb Raider by Nixxes Software. The announcement came quietly, with a release note on Steam confirming the title update.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider famously supports NVIDIA’s DLSS alongside ray tracing. The integration of Intel XeSS allows owners of a GeForce GPU to take a look at the qualities of the technology compared to that of NVIDIA: like AMD’s FSR, in fact, XeSS is also capable of running on competing GPUs.

The difference lies in the fact that while on the Arc GPUs the upscaling management is entrusted to the XMX Engine, or the NVIDIA Tensor cores in Intel sauce, in the case of the GeForce and Radeon GPUs we rely on the shader units. Intel, in the past few weeks, explained that XeSS works on GPUs with Shader Model 6.4 support through the DP4a instruction.

In the past few hours, in addition to announcing the list price for the Arc A770, the Santa Clara company has declared that XeSS will be available in over 20 titles this year, thanks to updates of existing games and new productions on the way. In addition, Intel has SDK published on GitHub of technology to promote its diffusion.
