Mediatek will show the first demo of Wi-Fi 7 during CES 2022

MediaTek plans to demo Wi-Fi 7 next year, even though Wi-Fi 6 has barely reached consumers. This was confirmed by the company this week. The same plans to carry out the show at CES 2022 (Consumer Electronics Show) in January and this would make it one of the first companies to adopt the new standard. It should be mentioned that Wi-Fi 6 and 6E are still quite new, so Wi-Fi 7 is far from reaching consumers.

MediaTek confirmed this demonstration during the MediaTek Summit event that took place last Friday. During it, the company mentioned that Wi-Fi 7 could offer up to 2.4 times faster than Wi-Fi 6E. James Chen, Associate Vice President of Product Marketing, stated that the company seeks to become a leader in this technology. Chen also explained that the maximum speed referenced applies using the same number of antennas as Wi-Fi 6E. In addition, he commented that Wi-Fi 7 would more effectively block interference with other neighboring networks.

Although MediaTek is set to demonstrate Wi-Fi 7 next year, a report from the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) indicates that won’t set standards for technology until 2024. The same report also suggests that this new technology could reach speeds of up to 40 gigabits per second.

Recall that Qualcomm started talking about Wi-Fi 7 in 2019 even before Wi-Fi 6 was available. The company’s Vice President of Technology stated that this new technology would be capable of reaching higher speeds than wired connections. In addition, Wifi 7 can use the 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz bands simultaneously.

For now, MediaTek announced that it is working with AMD to launch its own Wi-Fi chips. With this they seek to replace the Intel chips of the motherboards for Ryzen.

What do you think of the speeds that Wi-Fi 7 could reach?
