NVIDIA DLAA: Not just DLSS, Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing is coming

Alex Tardif, Lead Graphics Engineer at ZeniMax Online Studios, announced that The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) will support the technology with the next “fall update” NVIDIA DLAA, or rather the unpublished Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing. The game will also gain DLSS, the artificial intelligence-based upscaling technique that has been known since the launch of the GeForce RTX 2000.

The Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing, according to the words on Twitter of Tardif, it will do nothing but use artificial intelligence techniques to ensure better anti-aliasing. Everything will happen at the native resolution, there will be no lower resolution rendering and consequent upscaling.

“We are adding a new option for NVIDIA DLAA (Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing), using their DL technology, but without the upscaling component, at full resolution for fantastic quality AA. On RTX cards, people already play ESO at high fps, so a pure anti-aliasing option works well, ”explains Tardif.

“A huge thank you to the NVIDIA team for having us indulged and then supported in releasing it when we presented and tested this modification of their DLSS technology. It’s not something all games might need, but it made sense to ESO, ”the developer added.

In conclusion, it seems that DLAA is not NVIDIA’s sack meal but an experiment that the ESO developers have done and that the US company has endorsed, evidently finding its goodness.

Much information remains unclear: Which NVIDIA cards will DLAA work on, if it uses Tensor core drives in any way, or if it will be agnostic and will also run on hardware from other manufacturers. Also, will something remain for the benefit of ESO alone or will it be available for other development studies? We just have to wait for more information.
