NVIDIA DLSS 3 shines in Digital Foundry’s first benchmarking

NVIDIA granted to Digital Foundry the ability to get your hands on the GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition e get a taste of the qualities of DLSS 3the new version of upscaling technology that promises an even higher performance boost than previous iterations, while maintaining high image quality.

The DLSS 3 state mainly analyzed on the performance front with Cyberpunk 2077 (Overdrive RT Edition), Spider-Man Remastered and Portal RTX, all updated to support the new version of the technology that will only work on the GeForce RTX 4000, at least initially. The test was carried out at resolution 4K.

Unfortunately, Digital Foundry was not allowed to show accurate frame rates (fps), while it was able to publish differences in percentage terms. Even so, DLSS 3 seems capable of offering noticeable performance improvements over native rendering, with jumps depending on the game and the scenario from 2 to 5 times. These results are also due to the ability of the technology not be affected by a possible bottleneck linked to the CPUsince the generation of frames by the DLSS 3 does not rely on the ability of the CPU to prepare the instructions useful for creating the frames.

Digital Foundry’s analysis explains how DLSS 3 works, which it sees in the frame generation with AI the main difference with the previous version. And even if this work introduces some latencythe integration of technology Reflex in DLSS 3 he runs to the rescue, improving the overall picture.

For example, in Portal RTX latency with DLSS 3 only slightly higher than DLSS 2, which is 56 ms versus 53 ms, and much better than latency with native resolution rendering reaching 95 ms. In Cyberpunk 2077, DLSS 3 climbs to 54ms versus 31ms for DLSS 2, but still below 62ms for native rendering. So if on the one hand the latency compared to the previous version goes up (but not always markedly), there seem to be more advantages than disadvantages compared to native rendering.

In this article you will find a list of the titles that will receive the DLSS 3 first. As for the GeForce RTX 4000 range, we remind you that the GeForce RTX 4090 will arrive on the market on October 12thfollowed in November by two GeForce RTX 4080 models.
