Nvidia GeForce Now without some RTX games

We want to stream our ray traced games.

Nvidia GeForce Now launched today after one of the longest running beta tests of all time, bringing the battle straight to Google Stadia. And despite the bulky library, GeForce Now has lost some interesting titles.

The situation first came to our attention when Ars Technica and The Verge issued a brief impression, noting that some of the games in the library were missing, presumably due to licensing issues with some of the major publishers.

Chief among these publishers are giants like Rockstar Games and Square Enix, which are behind big games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and, more generally, Final Fantasy. That’s right, the entire Final Fantasy series is missing on a platform that promises all of its users the ability to take their computer library wherever you go.

In any case, even if Nvidia GeForce Now lacks all of these games, the fact that you can use your existing Steam, Origin or Epic Games Store accounts means you get thousands more games than Google Stadia – a service which is currently limited to 27 games available.

We’re not sure when and if the missing games will go to the library, but we’ve already reached out to Team Green for comments, planning to update this article as soon as we get answers.

What’s up with RTX gaming?

While they’ve been out for a while, there are three games that serve as a great demonstration of what ray tracing with Nvidia Turing technologies allows: Metro Exodus, Control, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Currently, the only game available on GeForce Now is Metro Exodus.

And we don’t want to pass up Metro Exodus – it’s a fantastic game that also showcases video technology beautifully – but the lack of Control and Shadow of the Tomb Raider is disappointing. When we tested the best tracing in Control using various Nvidia RTX graphics cards, we were blown away by the possibilities.

Before Control, in fact, we thought ray tracing was a nifty and minor trick that looks cool and unnecessary. If any game can prove that ray tracing is as good as Nvidia painted it, it is Control.

Nvidia GeForce Now could easily be a great showcase to give users an idea of what the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 has to offer, the best graphics that won’t ruin your budget. It’s possible that the early lack of ray tracing is temporary, while Nvidia is working on licensing agreements, but it’s still strange for such a service to run.

If you’ve signed up for GeForce Now and want to try out ray tracing, you can still do it with games like Metro Exodus, Wolfenstein: Youngblood, and Deliver Us the Moon. And that’s definitely more than zero ray-traced games on Google Stadia.

It should be understood that over time, more and more computer games are using ray tracing, making the technology less of a problem. But some of the best ray traced games are currently not available on the platform and we hope they will return to GeForce Now.

Here are the best gaming laptops of 2020.
