Panos Panay the boss of Microsoft Surface, now I also drive the development of Windows 10

Microsoft still revises its corporate structure, just under two years after the real earthquake that saw the departure of the former chief of Windows Terry Myerson. Panos Panay further increases its responsibilities, and in addition to the Surface division, he will also lead the development division of the client part Windows.

For those who have missed a few steps, the situation is a bit intricate, so it is worth explaining it a bit well. In Myerson's time, Windows was a separate division: with the reorganization of March 2018, it was divided into two parts:

  • One that deals with the development of the "heart" of Windows, has returned to the division (led by Scott Guthrie) which also develops cloud and Azure and AI.
  • One, which is called Windows Experience, deals with the adaptation of the operating system to various categories of devices, such as PCs, notebooks, consoles and everything else. This part falls under the division Experiences and Devices, and is led by Rajesh Jha

As of February 25, the Surface division and the Windows Experience division will join and report to Panay, under the name of Windows + Devices; formally they will always be part of Experience and Devices and will always report to Jha. From 2018 to today, the head of the Windows Experience has been Joe Belfiore, one of the main public faces of the entire Windows Phone / Mobile project; from February 25, Belfiore will lead the Office Experience division.

The novelty was reported by Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet, always one of the main observers of the Microsoft universe. In his internal presentation email, Panay says the new division will simplify the decision-making process, making the objectives clearer, and will ultimately improve the Windows 10 experience on Surface products and those of third-party manufacturers.
