Handling massive amounts of data and materials across multiple devices can be cumbersome. Especially when all we have at hand is an old USB 2.0 pendive or a portable disk drive. For a typical file transfer, an ordinary external SSD is definitely enough, but it may turn out to be too slow when working with them. This problem certainly does not apply to Samsung’s X5 drives, which combine the use of the NVMe protocol and an intermediary medium in the form of a Thumderbolt 3 connector.
Not surprisingly, the X5s are capable of reading speeds of 2,800 MB / s in sequential operations and 2,300 MB / s in sequential reading. Samsung in the press release indicates that such performance allows the user to transfer 20 GB of 4K UHD video in twelve seconds. Of course, to work, it requires a device equipped with a Thunderbolt 3 port 4 times faster than USB 3.1.
The X5 will be launched on September 3 in three capacity variants – 500 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB. Their MSRP prices are (consecutively) $ 399.99, $ 699.99 and $ 1399.99. The media is covered by a 3-year limited warranty, and the Samsung application allows data encryption using AES 256-bit. The whole is complemented by high resistance to mechanical and thermal damage.
