Prepare the power supplies, even the Radeon 7000 will consume more

If on the one hand on the ground of the new ones NVIDIA GeForce RTX of the 4000 series we talk about consumption up to 600 W, it seems that even on the opposite side the energy bar is ready to rise. In a long one intervista a Tom’s Hardware, Sam Naffziger at AMD confirmed an increase in power that should be closer to the competition.

In the interview, Naffziger confirmed an increase in consumption especially in the high end of the new GPU range. Some time ago, on the other hand, there was talk of consumption up to 450 Wattwhich would lead to the delivery of the top of the range for the series Radeon 7000 from oltre 100 Watt higher than the current one, the Radeon RX 6950 XT.

Navi 21, in fact, has a TDP of 335 Watt and is powered by a double 8-pin connector. The increase planned for the new Navi 31 would therefore require a third connector or alternatively a PCIe Gen 5 connector conforming to the ATX 3.0 standard, a point on which however Naffziger did not dwell.

What we do know about the new generation of GPUs is that the performance per Watt have been increased by 50%. With these assumptions, in terms of pure performance, the new generation of GPUs should come to offer a doubling compared to the current one.

The arrival of the new video cards is expected for end of the year, which is why we will undoubtedly get more information in the months to come. For the time being, Naffziger stressed that the competition will need to push the horsepower much higher than announced to face AMD’s proposal.

The new cards in the Radeon 7000 series will be based on the architecture RDNA 3 and the production process a 5 nm di TSMC. They will be the first cards to take advantage of a packaging a chiplet inherited from the CPU range Ryzen by AMD. They will have a redesigned compute unit, an improved graphics pipeline, and exclusivity Next generation AMD Infinity Cache.
