Introduction

Hi all!

As you may know now LEDs and more precisely RGB LEDs are on the rise and each brand must release the most products equipped with it. We are back at Cooler Master today for a presentation of their latest fans, the Master Fan Pro 120 RGB! On the program are 12 cm fans colored as they should be and available in 2 versions, the Air Balance and the Air Pressure, 2 models intended for different uses, the Air Balance for the boxes and the Air Pressure for the coolers (logically ).
The MasterFan Pro 120 RGB are available either individually at a recommended price of 19.90 € or by pack of 3 with the RGB controller at around 80 €, they are placed here in the mid-range for RGB models, let’s see all that more closely!

The Cooler Master Masterfan Pro 120 RGB is therefore a fan with 12 cm sides and a thickness of 2.5 cm, a classic that should not pose the slightest problem in a classic case. The connection is made via a 4-pin PWM connector for the ventilation part and another 4-pin connector to drive the LEDs, which will allow the fan speed to be varied by the motherboard (or a rheobus) and the LEDs via the motherboard (depending on the compatibility of the latter) or the dedicated Cooler Master controller.
The speed of rotation varies between 650 RPM minimum to 1300 RPM maximum, a fan which should therefore be rather quiet even at full blast with its relatively low speed. The airflow of 42.7 CFM is average for this type of product, don’t expect a blower though, that’s not the point here!
The bearing is of the POM Bearing type, given for a lifespan (MTBF) of 490,000 hours (or 56 years), so there is plenty to do even if there is not really a lot of data on this type bearing. In the worst case, the 5-year warranty will allow you to be quiet for a while.
Offered at a price of around 20 € we are here in the entry level of this type of fan, it could be interesting for those who do not want to take the more expensive models of the competition, if it is good at practical of course!

Unpacking and bundle

The box is sober like what we usually find at the brand. There is a photo of the animals on dark gray font, the brand’s logo of course as well as the model. The emphasis is on the compatibility of the RGB functionality with different brands, such as MSI Mystic Light Sync, Asus Aura Syn etc.

In the box we find the 3 fans packed in individual boxes as well as a small box containing the RGB controller. Here there is not much to say, everything is well packaged and should withstand the shock during transport, as long as you do not jump on it of course 😉

The RGB controller is delivered with 4 cables allowing to connect fans or RGB strips and their adapters, a USB cable to connect it to the motherboard as well as of course the manual. Note that this controller does not regulate the fan speed, we can only manage the LEDs.

Presentation

Here are the beasts! The carcass is made of flexible plastic which makes the animals rather strange when handling, corners entirely made of rubber are present in each corner in order to dampen vibrations as well as possible. The construction of the set is similar to the fans found on the brand’s AIO Masterliquid kit (tested here), with some small changes like the rubber wedges.
The transparent blades will be perfect for diffusing the light of the LEDs.

You can see a little switch on the back label, but what can it do? There are 3 positions, R, B or RGB. It is quite simply possible to set the colors of the LEDs in red for “R”, blue for “B” or in RGB. This small switch will therefore only be used if you have no way of controlling the color of the LEDs, either blue or red.

The corners as I said are entirely made of rubber, itself screwed to the casing of the fan. This will help to absorb any vibrations as well as possible.

There is 1 doubled cable (which can be detached by pulling on it, to place them in different places) on each fan, 2 connectors are present, 1 for the fan itself in PWM and the other for the RGB LEDs .

The RGB controller is small (9 x 5.3 x 1.4 cm) and therefore can be easily installed everywhere in the box (the back is also magnetic). Once powered on, the brand’s logo lights up in the center, because you shouldn’t forget the LEDs!

On the sides we have 2 slots to accommodate the LEDs on each side as well as a Sata port and the last to connect everything to the motherboard.

LEDs in practice

Here is the software to adjust the RGB LEDs of the Cooler Master Masterfan Pro RGB, if you decide to use the brand’s controller. You can also control them via the different software from different motherboard manufacturers, if your motherboard is equipped with an RGB connector of course. The software from Cooler Master is available here.
Here it is possible to choose between several pre-recorded effects or even fixed colors, like almost all software of the genre 😉 Here is what it gives with the MasterFan Pro RGB:

As you can see the colors stand out very well on the new fans from Cooler Master. Of course each fan can be controlled independently and therefore display different colors, as you wish! It is sure that if you want to make a Christmas tree it is quite possible to do it 😉

Sound level

In terms of noise pollution, the Cooler Master MasterFan Prro RGB 12 cm behaves very well! At a minimum we arrive at 32.5 dB compared to an ambient sound level of 32.4 dB, which is clearly very good and is difficult to perceive. Once fully, as we can see, the sound level increases logically, reaching 36.6 dB, which is once again really excellent and we can say that the fans are silent!
On the other hand, when we approach the ear we can hear quite distinctly a typical rolling noise, but the latter can no longer be heard once the ear is 50 cm away, a pity however even if the majority of users will not even notice it. !

Conclusion

We have now arrived at the end of this test, what about the Cooler Master MasterFan Pro RGB 120?
Cooler Master continues on the line of its fans and the sequence of RGB products with its MasterFan Pro RGB 120! The brand offers a product that is really very well finished, equipped with large rubber corners that will absorb any vibrations and of course illuminated with RGB LEDs that will appeal to fans 😉
The noise level is really very well managed by the brand, thank you for the more than reasonable speed of the thing, peaking at 1300 RPM. At the minimum we can clearly say that the MasterFan Pro RGB 120 is almost inaudible, at the maximum and with only 36.6 dB (according to my measurements, the results changing strongly depending on the distance and the conditions) it is also very discreet. The only small downside is the presence of rolling noise when you glue the ear, but unless you are very picky it will not even be noticed!
Now comes the price, offered at a recommended price of 19.90 € each or 78.90 € per 3 with the RGB controller the MasterFan Pro RGB 120 is positioned very well against the competition equipped with RGB (generally between 25 and 30 €). Even if it remains expensive in itself for fans, fans will be able to enjoy the joys of RGB for a few euros less, which is always taken and “gamer” configurations will be well lit 😉

The +

  • Build quality
  • Finish
  • Quiet
  • Price (to some extent)

The –

  • Audible bearings.
  • ..for the most picky

A big thank you to Vincent from Cooler Master who allowed me to do this test.
