Ryzen 7 4700U, AMD’s first 8-core APU is arriving

The Reddit Rogame user has found one in the PCMark 10 database new AMD APU called Ryzen 7 4700U. The chip, intended for the mobile sector, belongs to the family Renoir, expected to debut in the first quarter.

As far as we know so far, Renoir APUs are based on architecture Zen 2 and the 7 nanometer production process by TSMC; they will replace the current Picasso APUs based on the 12 nanometer Zen + architecture. The new APUs should once again integrate an architecture-based GPU Vega.

The part of the x86 cores is of interest: there is talk of one solution with 8 cores, apparently without SMT (therefore 8 threads), with a base frequency of 2 GHz but capable of accelerating up to 4.2 GHz. The TDP should be equal to 15 watts. Since it is not an announced processor, it is currently impossible to say whether it is the final frequencies.

The current Ryzen 7 3700U, equipped with four cores with SMT, operates at 2.3 / 4 GHz, so the peak frequency would rise by 200 MHz. The new APU has totaled 4893 points in PCMark 10, an 18% higher score than the 3700U and 28% compared to the 3500U.

The new AMD APU defends well when compared to Intel’s current mobile chips: the Core i7-1065G7 (10 nanometer Ice Lake) is 2% slower (4 cores / 8 threads), while the Comet Lake CPU at 14 nm Core i7-10710U (6 cores / 12 threads) is 11 % faster in the same test thanks to the higher operating frequency.

It cannot be excluded that AMD also has a more powerful model, also introducing the family in the mobile sector Ryzen 9. AMD could enable the SMT, thus creating an 8 core / 16 thread or maintain 8 core / 8 thread while raising the frequencies. We will probably know more at CES 2020 which will be held in the first half of January. Stay tuned!
