Scientists have solved the toxic problem of perovskite cells

Perovskite may and has the potential to revolutionize solar cells, but before it can happen on a massive scale, its ills must be overcome. As one of the journal publications indicates Nature Sustainability, which will bring closer the discovery of scientists from North Illinois University (NIU) and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the toxic problem of perovskite cells has just happened.

The toxic perovskite cells have just been resolved

The problem with perovskite solar cells comes down to the toxic lead in the cells that can leak when damaged. However, a special, newly developed foil in a form similar to adhesive tape can absorb such leaks and, most importantly, its aim is to conquer the commercial market, not just laboratories.

In their quest to popularize perovskite cells, scientists are both looking for an alternative to lead and for the possibility of preventing them from leaking. At least to the environment, because the mentioned foil will not stop the toxic material from leaking out, but it will trap it before it enters the soil. In tests of this EVA (ethylene vinyl) film with a special lamination with a lead-absorbing layer, it wrapped solar panels with perovskite cells and exposed them to the weather conditions on the roof for three months.

They were then damaged with razor blades and hammers and then submerged in water for a week to demonstrate that this unique layer was capable of trapping 99.9 percent of the leaking lead. It is known that this film can be applied to both sides of perovskite solar cells to encapsulate them in a standard manufacturing process.
