Because of the coronavirus pandemic, many factories had to close for a few weeks to protect employee health, impacting their production figures and unit shipments to distributors. According to recent estimates, the overall impact on the laptop PC market was 8%, although there are several companies with figures above this percentage.
The company most affected by the closure of factories was by a wide difference Apple, which experienced yoy drops of 21%. Then followed by HP with a 13.8% drop and Acer with a 12.6% drop. Interestingly, Dell experienced a small growth of 1.1%, being the only company in the Top 5 not to show falls.
Even though they had shipped 53.7 million PCs, these shipments were unable to meet the demand for laptops globally because many people had to buy laptops to continue working from home, causing a lack of supply in many countries. It will be interesting to see how the situation continues, and if supply finally matches demand again.
